Dear Store Owner:

I am a supporter of the Southern Adirondack Tobacco-Free Coalition. The Southern Adirondack Tobacco-Free Coalition is a group of local organizations and individuals from Saratoga, Warren and Washington counties. Our purpose is to promote a tobacco-free environment and the health of the people living in our communities.

This letter is in response to the amount of tobacco retail advertising in your store. Big Tobacco spends $60 million a year on tobacco ads that make smoking look cool with the goal of attracting and addicting our children. Tobacco will eventually kill six million of today’s youth. One reason they start smoking, retail advertising. Research has shown retail advertising is more powerful than peer pressure and has double the effect on children than it has on adults. I respect your right to sell cigarettes, a legal product. However, please consider the fact that this product has lethal consequences and your store can help prevent the initiation of young new smokers.

I would like to encourage your store to adopt a policy in regard to tobacco advertising with the goal of eliminating tobacco company produced advertisements and promotions. The simple act of your store producing price lists instead of using the tobacco company produced logo and colors, will decrease the glamour of tobacco to our children.

Your store is an integral part of my community. As community members we have an obligation to protect future generations from harms way. Please join me in protecting our youth from falling prey to Big Tobacco. Adopting a policy against tobacco company produced advertising and promotion will be vital to our success.

We would like to assist you in developing this policy. The Souther Adironadack Tobacco-Free Coalition will be proud to help you. We must all work together to decrease the number one cause of preventable death, tobacco use. Thank you.
